Whats with this weather

This fall sure is the year for fall ball. We're in October and it is still in the 90's outside during the day. Commissioners are frantically trying to reschedule the (7) rainout games. That is how many we usually have in a week, and I think that's it for the season? Games end in another week or two and then fall playoffs.

We've fielded many complaints from the fall ball teams made up of non-travel players, indicating that they cant even score, let alone win a game, against these travel teams in the running. It is certainly more fun watching the white sox trounce the red sox than it is watching our kids, win or loose, when one team is up so many runs in the top of the first, that they cant steal anymore. The announcement that early is depressing. When my son played fall ball a few years back, he was put on one of these travel teams where he was the only kid on the team from orland. He won every game and they took first place. ((I hope I did not already tell this story.)) He hated baseball that season as much as those kids out there loosing every game. It is not fun to play rec ball when the teams are not somewhat leveled off talent wise, and if you think so, I'm sorry, you've got a sad case of schadenfreude.

The root of this problem is that, afraid to make out-of-town coaches have to draft kids they don't know, the fall ball team building process is designed to allow coaches to pre-select up to 6 players, after which the commissioner builds the teams based on player requests. This process is seriously flawed because for all practical purposes, a coach can pick his entire team! Of course, the winning coaches see no problem! Watch for this to change next year, so that at the very least, after the first 6, the players are snake-drafted onto the teams.

Let me know your thoughts.

I think that it is important to note that a draft offers very little benefit if the coaches don't know the players. A draft must be accompanied by a reasonable tryout session so that coaches have some chance of evaluating the talent level. Otherwise, the inequities become even greater as those few coaches who know the players can add them to their rosters even later in the "draft."

The inequity in the talent in the Fall baseball league must not be allowed to stand. It creates an awful experience for those players who suffer through loss after loss. And, the lack of competitive play offers very little development for the players on the winning team of a one-sided contest.

In my opinion, OYA should not welcome a coach who threatens to pull his team just because he can't secure a number of talented players. I doubt if these coaches would follow through on their threat to go elsewhere, but if they did---good riddance. All coaches should appreciate the benefit of competitive play. In my view, no players should be "protected"--with the exception of the head coach's son--who should be assigned the proper pick in the draft based upon his abilities (as determined during the tryout process).
